Why the date matters
The gap between India and most Western countries isn’t fixed. India never changes its clocks; the US, UK and Europe do, and not on the same weekends. A weekly 7:00 pm IST call is 9:30 am in New York in July and 8:30 am in December, and for a few weeks each spring and autumn the US and Europe are out of step with each other too.
Always send the time with its zone, such as “7:00 pm IST / 9:30 am EDT”, so nobody has to guess.
Questions
- What is the time difference between India and the US?
- India (IST) is 9 hours 30 minutes ahead of New York in summer and 10 hours 30 minutes ahead in winter. For Los Angeles it is 12 hours 30 minutes and 13 hours 30 minutes.
- Does India have daylight saving time?
- No. IST is the same all year. The US, UK, Europe and parts of Australia change their clocks, so the gap to India shifts by an hour twice a year.
- When do the clocks change?
- In the US and Canada, on the second Sunday of March and the first Sunday of November. In the UK and Europe, on the last Sunday of March and of October. This tool applies the right offset for the date you pick.
- What is a good time for a call between India and the US?
- For the US East Coast, 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm IST falls in their morning. For the West Coast, late evening in India is their morning, and early morning in India is their previous evening.
